Piracy on the High ISPs

Aye mateys! You know where more piracy takes place than off the Horn of Africa? The internet, and do you know who’s to blame? Well, we don’t know either but on this episode we walk the plank and try to figure it out. Do you want to know what special guest Kelly Guimont‘s favorite movie trilogy is (hint: it’s not Twilight)? Does Harry actually live in a glass house on Piracy Lane? How much brie does Justin eat? Listen in and find out. Oh, and feel free to copy this episode as many times as you’d like. Arrrrr.

  1. The “I wouldn’t have paid for it anyway” argument is ridiculous for two reasons.

Firstly, human beings are excellent at deluding themselves. You might start off legitimately only downloading things you wouldn’t pay for, and morally, that might be acceptable. But the vast majority of people will eventually rationalize and download the things that they WOULD pay for, which is obviously wrong. A common reason why people are willing to do something that is contrary to their sense of morality, is that they have conditioned themselves to a similar behavior and erroneously compare the wrong behavior to the benign behavior they are accustomed to.

Secondly, from a legal standpoint, it’s impossible (or at least extremely cumbersome) to prove your lack of intent to buy a product, and therefore it is not meaningful to claim you only downloaded something because you wouldn’t have paid for it otherwise.
