In this episode we talk about what can be done to be prepared for an emergency. Chaim is the town’s social media representative, and with him, we talk about different methods to communicate in light of an emergency.

    Great episode! As someone who works in the E911 and EMO fields, I took great interest in your discussion.

    A couple of things to note is the complete lack of texting capability in most 911 centers. Most centers cannot receive text message (SMS or MMS) at all, nor have they begun to prepare for them. At my center we have partnered with a product called Gem911 which allows us to receive Verizon Wireless SMS text messages only (T-Mobile will be on board shortly). Hopefully I will have that rolled out shortly and with interest from the deaf community it will interesting to see how its used.

    There are failures regarding the current generation of texting 911 features including the lack of location, the lack of MMS, and the ability to spam or spoof a center (see swatting).

    On the topic of Alert Notification I agree with Chaim, Nixle is a decent system and I wish I could have got our center on board with it. The product does have limitations but overall it works decently.
